Effective Leadership Characteristics for Successful School Outcomes: A Delphi Study
Natalia Romo
ProQuest LLC, EDD/CI Dissertation, University of Phoenix
There is a disparity in academic performance of schools in similar demographic and socioeconomic areas that need to be addressed to increase student achievement more consistently among all schools. The purpose of this qualitative Delphi study was to explore and gather expert perceptions to arrive at a consensus to provide a better understanding of how to affect positive school outcomes throughout schools of similar demographics and socioeconomics for consistency in student achievement. The primary purpose aforementioned addressed the first research question, which asked educational experts to perceive the educational, entrepreneurial, environmental, and executive practices of elementary school (K-5) principals in high-achieving demographically diverse schools. A secondary purpose of this study emerged from the second research questions, which asked educational experts' perceptions of the possibility of franchising effective educational, entrepreneurial, environmental, and executive practices of elementary school (K-5) principals of high-achieving demographically diverse schools. The first major finding of the study revealed from the panelist responses that effective leadership practices are well known and agreed upon, yet there is a gap in what is known and what is practiced by school principals. The second major finding highlighted the possibility of franchising schools with specific structures, such as strong leadership surrounded with strong support systems involving district support, high-quality teachers, and shared leadership. Implications and recommendations for successful practice of school leaders included principal preparation programs, principal mentoring or apprenticeship programs, specified professional development, and growth plans to influence improvement and consistency in school performance.
