The Dynamic Role of a Doctor of Ministry Education in Facilitating the Personal Transformation of Pentecostal Leaders
Mark T. Boucher
ProQuest LLC, D.Min. Dissertation, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary
In light of today's explosion of knowledge and the complexity of American culture, Pentecostal church leaders face the daunting challenge of effecting biblical change in their communities. Biblical truth reveals that true, lasting change begins by the power of God activated in a believer through faith and perseverance in Christ. To assure the development of healthy believers in the church, the leader must first become a healthy, growing disciple. Renewal and transformation in others requires a leader who willingly pursues and models personal transformation. This project sought to challenge pastors and church leaders to consider the dynamic role of the D.Min. program at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS) in facilitating personal transformation. During 2008, surveys of past graduates, as well as interviews with current participants, revealed the exciting possibilities of renewal through Spirit-anointed education. The specific objective of this project was to challenge church leaders from the Southern New England District of the Assemblies of God (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) to consider a doctoral program at AGTS. Through a seminar combining personal testimony, AGTS course information, and the need for personal renewal, this project endeavored to reveal to future participants the exciting possibilities the D.Min. program offers for personal transformation. A post-session evaluation provided qualitative feedback on the presentation. Results from the evaluations showed that ninety-three percent of those who attended a seminar responded affirmatively to consider further investigation into a D.Min. degree at AGTS for their future. In addition to the above seminar, I developed a survey to gather testimonies and information from D.Min. graduates, which confirmed the positive effect of the D.Min. program at AGTS in promoting personal and lasting change. Findings also indicated that if more pastors and church leaders better understood the importance of continuing formal education under the leadership of anointed teachers and administrators, they too would experience a greater measure of renewal in their lives and ministry. This project also provided a resource for AGTS to use in promoting the benefits of the school to future participants. The greatest finding of this project occurred in the testimonies of the changed lives of leaders who dared to continue to grow and learn. D.Min. participants and graduates, as a result of God's transforming work in and through them, can serve as catalysts for transformation in the worldwide Pentecostal movement.
