Faculty Preparation Program for New and Continuing Student Success Course Instructors
Kimberley Lowe
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Barry University
This study aimed to rectify the problem of inadequate preparation and support of faculty in the Student Success (SLS) course at Brentwood State College (name of institution changed for reasons of confidentiality) (BSC). This problem of practice is significant because the SLS course is intended to contribute significantly to students acquiring skills and knowledge aimed at student success and completion. Research on professional development in academic environments suggests that opportunities to learn and grow in teaching will likely influence student retention, productivity, satisfaction, and career agency (Campbell & O'Meara 2013; Neumann 2009; O'Meara et al., 2008; Terosky et al., 2014). This dissertation in practice (DiP) describes the development, design, and implementation of a faculty preparation program for the faculty of the first-year course, which is one of BSC's strategies to enhance student retention. The objective was to improve faculty readiness and effectiveness by analyzing their needs, designing a strategy to meet those needs, and evaluating the effectiveness of the strategy. Improvement science was used throughout implementation to help the facilitator plan, assess, and adjust the intervention accordingly. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative research methods to evaluate goal achievement and data to determine business impact. While initial results did not meet the overall goals for improved faculty readiness for all those who participated, or provide information on the link to student retention, faculty did discuss lessons learned and recommendations for consideration of the implementation of the virtual faculty preparation program. This DiP also increased the organization's awareness of how important student success in the SLS courses has on retention.
