Assessment of Digital Learning Collaboratives in Mental Health Recovery Communities
Lea Yazigi Wood
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Wayne State University
The current study was the first in the literature to examine the impact of a digital learning collaborative, The Learning Exchange (LEX), on the development and recovery of clubhouse members. The research study employed a content analysis technique where data was grouped into common themes to address the individual- and organizational-level questions ((Vaismoradi, 2019). Participants included 13 clubhouse members from 4 clubhouses (2 in the U.S, and 2 in Europe). Members consisted of 7 males and 6 females who ranged in age from 35-75 (M=55). Findings of this study revealed that not only did members benefit in expected ways like enhancing their technological and communication skills, but also assisted them with feelings of social isolation. LEX has also impacted members recovery and self-perception. Members feel like "they matter again" and their experiences are relevant to others who are living with similar mental health issues. Overall, clubhouse members expressed a positive attitude about their engagement in the digital learning collaborative. This study will serve as a basis for future studies examining the impact of digital learning collaboratives on the well-being of patients with mental health problems.
