Factors to Predict Student Retention in One Master's of Public Health Program
Erika R. Whittier
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Benedictine University
This observational, quantitative longitudinal study examined the retention gap among students studying exclusively online and those studying on-campus and compared variables related to outcomes and the completion rates of students at one private, non-profit, four-year university Master of Public Health Program (MPH) in the Midwest. It was unknown if and to what extent the predictor variables (age, gender, ethnicity, dependents, adjusted gross income, entering GPA, term GPA, courses attempted, courses completed, time to completion, and previous educational institution) related to student attrition and degree completion. This study examined MPH student enrollment from fall 2008 through fall 2013 with a six-year follow-up period for each enrolled student. This study used a multivariable Cox proportional-hazards model to jointly examine each variable in relation to MPH degree completion over the six-year time period.
