How College Freshmen Describe Their Experiences and Behaviors of Using Personal Communication Devices and Social Networking Sites
Dwane Glenn Martinson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This study explored how enrolled freshman college students, ages 18-21, described their experiences and user behaviors while actively using personal communication devices (PCD) and social networking sites (SNS) to complete course-related activities in their introductory psychology class at a four-year public university. Twenty semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions via Google Meet were used to gather the data for this qualitative descriptive study. The theoretical foundations for this study were the elaboration likelihood model and the theory of learning for the mobile age. The theoretical foundations led to the two research questions: (1) How do enrolled college freshmen students ages 18-21 described their experiences while actively using PCD and SNS to complete course-related activities in their introductory psychology class? and (2) How do enrolled college freshmen students ages 18-21 described their user behaviors (which includes, but not limited to self-control and behavioral addictions, if any) while actively using their PCD and SNS to complete course-related activities in their introductory psychology class at a four-year public university? The results of this study indicated that college age students are addicted to PCD and SNS while in their college classroom. The themes that emerged from this study were PCD and SNS use, Behaviors, and Experiences. The findings of this study highlighted the need for more research to be conducted as the participants were between 18-21 years of age and enrolled in an introductory psychology course at a public four-year university is the Southwest region of the United States.
