Servant Leadership and Its Impact on Teacher Retention: A Case Study
Stephen Haynes
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Nazarene University
The target of this qualitative case study was to discern the effectiveness of principals' servant leadership style in retaining elementary school teachers in two rural elementary schools in Oklahoma. Research shows that a great model of leadership to choose as an administrator is that of a servant leader. Servant leadership makes sure that the follower is always put first and that their needs are met (Black, 2010; Sinek 2014). Greenleaf (1970) introduced the world to servant leadership over 30 years ago. These two schools were chosen because their principals scored the highest on the LSI servant leadership survey. The LSI servant leadership survey was distributed to participating elementary principals, interviews were held, and the study was created. Teacher participants were selected based on their first response to a participation email. Findings of the study revealed principal participants who demonstrated servant leadership traits and teacher participants who remained at their schools because of the relationships they had created with their principals. This study displays to researchers and school administrators how servant leadership style might impact teacher retention. This study also supports the ongoing research into servant leadership.
