A Phenomenological Study of the Perceptions of College Students Regarding How Snapchat Use Influences Their Interpersonal Relationships
Danny Shaha
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This qualitative study analyzed the perceptions of recent college graduates of the influence of Snapchat use on their interpersonal relationships while enrolled in college. 10 recent college graduates between the ages of 21 and 24 were interviewed. Data was analyzed by hand, and several themes emerged regarding how Snapchat both positively and negatively influenced their interpersonal relationships. Positive influences were its role in facilitating new relationships; its utility in relationship maintenance; and the sense by users that they could send sensitive content securely. Conversely, the negative influences were its tendency to breed negative responses and feelings (including assumptions, judgments, FOMO, and jealousy); Snapchat's facilitation of risky and sneaky behaviors; and its negative impact on relationship depth. Overall, Snapchat was determined to be a useful tool for facilitating and maintaining relationships if it was not the only communication tool, but rather an additional one. For higher education practitioners working with students, these findings may assist in creating appropriate intervention strategies, assisting in conflict resolution and management of difficult interpersonal communication, and supporting students' overall well-being and psychosocial development.
