ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
College-level students experience various life stressors that impact them academically, mentally, and physically. They struggle to navigate through those stressors; however, campus counseling services are underutilized. (Laidlaw et al., 2016). The central purpose of this Dissertation in Practice was to understand college-level students' perception of barriers that prevent the use of counseling services at a university campus in Southeast Texas while gaining an understanding of the motivational factors that influence therapeutic engagement on college campuses. First, three research questions guided the study: What are college students' initial interactions with mental health centers? What barriers prevent college-level students from seeking counseling through campus mental health centers? What motivators influence students to seek counseling through campus mental health centers? Additionally, the study's results indicated that undergraduate college-level students would like to utilize campus counseling services but are not completely aware or informed of the process. Finally, this study concluded with a comprehensive mental health intervention program and a recommendation to help provide clear and thorough information to students during freshman orientation.
