In Their Own Words: A Co-Cultural Examination of the Communication Strategies of Chief Diversity Officers in the CCCU
Kimberly Ann Okesson
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
The purpose of this study was to discover the communication strategies of Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) employed at primarily white member institutions of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). The theoretical framework of Mark Orbe's Co-Cultural Theory was utilized to explore how CDOs communicate and describe their communicative experiences. Co-cultural theory considers the intersection of communication, culture, and power and illuminates communicative practices of co-cultural group members when communicating with dominant cultural group members. This study also expanded co-cultural theory through the discovery of co-cultural communication tactics not previously articulated. In-depth interviews with CDOs provided the participants the opportunity to describe their communication experiences in their own words, answering a call in the literature for research to be conducted with diversity practitioners. The findings from this study concluded that CDOs do employ strategic co-cultural communicative practices when engaging with dominant culture group members to reach their diversity initiative goals on their campuses. Additionally, the findings informed theoretical and practical recommendations for CDOs, college administrators, and the CCCU. Finally, recommendations for further research are discussed.
