Virtual School Counseling and Its Impact on Therapeutic Relationships
Shalone McCarthy
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This qualitative research study examined the perspectives of school counselors who used virtual forums to establish and maintain therapeutic relationships. Using a generic qualitative design the study explored the lived experiences of school counselors who used virtual technology to conduct their school counseling programs with students. School counseling participants were a combination of those working at a virtual school and those required to use virtual forums due to the limitations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually with ten school counselors. Through the use of inductive analysis, the data gathered through interviews were analyzed to identify codes and themes. The primary identified themes included: accessibility, rapport, and safety. Results of the data analysis indicated that school counselors experienced both challenges and benefits to the use of virtual forums for therapeutic relationships. Most participants believed virtual forums could effectively manage therapeutic relationships with students when face-to-face counseling was not an option. With this effectiveness, however, many challenges need to be addressed for virtual school counseling to be a reliable and affective medium. For further use of the virtual school counseling process, school counselors recommend training and collaboration to make virtual forums more valid and reliable. Virtual forums call for developing specific virtual counseling training at the national and district levels of education. Further research is needed to effectively develop virtual school counseling processes and procedures. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
