School Reentry Outcomes for Students with Chronic Illnesses
Kristin Wikel
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Ball State University
Students with chronic illnesses are a diverse group of learners that experience many challenges in accessing the education environment. School absences, response to medical treatment, and chronic illness type impact educational attainment for students with chronic illnesses. Formalized school reintegration programs (e.g., school personnel reentry programs, peer education reentry programs, and student focused reentry programs) may help to address academic needs of students with chronic illnesses. A systematic review of pertinent research was conducted to understand the impact that school reentry programs have on academic outcomes of students with chronic illnesses. The majority of the 21 included studies on school reentry programs were considered student focused reentry programs, and these types of school reintegration programs demonstrated the greatest impact on academic outcomes for students with chronic illnesses.
