Dupe Becky Robinson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how Nigerian immigrant parents described how they develop successful relationships with their child's teachers in K-12th schools in the Eastern United States. RQ1 guided the study: how Nigerian immigrant parents described their challenges when developing relationships with their child's teachers in K-12 schools. RQ2: How do Nigerian immigrant parents describe the strategies to develop successful relationships with their child's teachers in K-12 schools? 20 Nigerian immigrant parents were recruited using convenient sampling. Data was collected through interviews and two focus groups. A thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data. The data was coded using an inductive approach, producing 165 codes and creating a codebook. Six themes were identified. Themes for RQ1: Limited understanding of the education system; Lack of Effective Communication and Partnership; Lack of access to relevant information and support. Themes for RQ2: Open and Consistent Communication; Active participation and Engagement with Teachers; Participation in Educational Workshops and Training Sessions. The findings from the study showed that establishing a solid and positive relationship between parents and teachers is vital for ensuring a child's academic success and overall well-being. Additionally, future research should focus on addressing the unique needs of immigrant parents and their children in their host country.
