Call in EFL Children's L2 Learning: Teachers' and Parents' Perspectives
Younmi Jeon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
A number of studies in mobile learning research have shown that the use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and many different types of technology within language learning contexts can potentially influence learning of students, particularly the younger generation. In the current study, two participant groups -- EFL teachers and parents of EFL children in South Korea -- were surveyed to explore the effectiveness of technology use for second language teaching and learning of young English language learners (ELLs). This study investigated the experiences and perspectives of the EFL stakeholders towards using the Wings language learning software program for child language teaching and learning, and how CALL could influence language teaching and learning. This study also examined the Wings program activities to understand teachers' and parents' perspectives of prominent CALL factors that support effective child English education. This study was conducted as a mixed methods research design. The quantitative data collection included a survey of 100 participants with closed-ended 5-point Likert-scale. For the qualitative data collection, nine of the participants were interviewed in order to share their opinions about CALL. Data obtained from the survey were analyzed through SPSS 26.0 software, and data obtained from the in-depth interviews were analyzed through a phenomenological approach. The findings indicated that, overall, EFL teachers and parents of EFL children held positive perspectives and attitudes toward the use of the Wings software program for children's English language education. The findings also shed light on several motivational factors of the Wings software for effective children's English education. Implications and future research suggestions are also discussed in the dissertation. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
