The Role of Elementary School Principals' Personality Traits and Servant Leadership in Building Trusting Relationships with Faculty

Trusting relationships among elementary school principals and their teachers are vital for the success of the students and the culture of the school as a whole. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore ways in which principals build trusting relationships with their staff at two elementary schools in the Central Southwest. From the lens of Northouse's (2022) Servant Leadership Questionnaire, this study specifically focused on the principals' self-perceptions of their implementation of servant leadership, as well as the perceptions each staff had of their principals' servant leadership implementation. In addition to gauging servant leadership implementation, this study identified the personality of each principal from the use of the Enneagram Personality Test. Results from this study indicated that although neither principal nor staff appeared to be knowledgeable of servant leadership, both principals viewed themselves as implementing servant leadership behaviors at moderate to high levels. Results also indicated that the staff at both schools rated their principal as implementing servant leadership behaviors. Enneagram Personality Tests revealed that both principals had the same top four Personality Types, just in different orders. Study findings can help elementary school principals understand the importance of building trusting relationships with their staff. Recommendations for further research include a quantitative study to examine the relationship between principal servant leadership implementation and their personality types according to the Enneagram, and a qualitative study to involve more teacher participants from each site.
