Nurturing Ethical Integration: Honoring Students' Spiritual and Religious Values in Public School Counseling
Kimberly Roberts
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
There is significance in addressing spiritual and religious dimensions in the counseling process, which results in the need for training materials and strategies to facilitate their ethical integration within the context of public-school counseling. Spirituality and religion play integral roles in many individuals' lives, offering frameworks for coping mechanisms and sources of strength and hope. By acknowledging and incorporating these dimensions into counseling, practitioners can create a more holistic and inclusive therapeutic environment. However, navigating spirituality and religion in public school settings presents unique challenges due to the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of students, legal considerations, and the separation of church and state. Ethically integrating spiritual and religious values in public school counseling requires careful attention to professional guidelines, legal frameworks, and the rights and beliefs of students and their families. Training materials play a vital role in equipping school counselors with the knowledge and skills necessary for this integration and should emphasize cultural competence, respect for diversity, and understanding of the legal and ethical boundaries that govern the school environment. Training materials and strategies that promote a nuanced understanding of diverse spiritual and religious beliefs will help counselors navigate complex dimensions, ensuring an inclusive and effective counseling experience for all students.
