Career Preparedness for Student-Athletes: A Qualitative Case Study
Jr. Lenard Hudnal
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The general problem addressed by this study was the lack of flexibility in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes' schedules for field-specific courses while enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. Student-athletes have schedules that can be very restrictive and could hinder their preparation for their career. The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore the faculty perceptions regarding the lack of time and resources for career preparation for student-athletes enrolled in an academic preparation or undergraduate degree program. In this case study, teachers and faculty were recruited from an NCAA-recognized institution and local area high schools in South Carolina. The study focused on two things: (a) How do faculty perceive the career preparedness and readiness resources and education available to student-athletes? and (b) What barriers do faculty perceive between career preparedness education effectiveness and student-athlete populations? After review of questionnaires and follow-up interviews, many teachers and faculty felt that their career preparedness and readiness resources are effective with the prevalence of AVID and experiential learning opportunities, but they also felt that time and availability are major barriers in the student-athlete participation though they are very focused on their post athletic career. This study adds to faculty perceptions of student-athlete job preparation. Recommendations for future research would be to broaden the scope of the study to include schools across the state, investigate these findings with a sole focus on high school student-athletes or collegiate student athletes only, and gather perspectives of student-athletes on their experiences while enrolled in experiential courses.
