The Success of Latina First-Generation College Graduates
Alejandra Perez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of St. Thomas (Houston)
This qualitative phenomenological research study aimed to investigate and describe the lived experiences of Latina first-generation college graduates in Texas with relation to the internal and external factors that led to successful degree attainment. The conceptual framework used to describe how Latina first-generation college students perceived their experience as they navigated through the complexities of higher education was adapted from Yosso's (2005) Community Cultural Wealth Model. The study explored how race and gender as well as supportive systems influenced their experience as they embarked in the undergraduate trajectory. As the study participants shared the difficulties and challenges, they faced, it was evident that they leveraged their cultural capitals to overcome such challenges. Therefore, understanding the factors that contributed to successful degree achievement gives institutions of higher education a better understanding of the population they currently serve and will continue to serve as the Latino population is expected to grow.
