Student Success Course: A Qualitative Study of Career College Students' Experiences

A student success curriculum adds a necessary layer of support for students to overcome their challenges to complete school, and a standard student success curriculum contains strategies to develop non-academic skills, sometimes called soft skills. These skills encompass affirmations, career readiness training, emotional intelligence, motivation, time management, problem-solving, prioritizing, and personal responsibility strategies. The student success course is designed as an introduction to college; therefore, it provides students with crucial campus information, nonacademic skills, and behavioral expectations to orient traditional and non-traditional students to the college environment while giving them the essential success tools to build competencies and endurance for college life. The topic of the study is the experience of completing a student success course among career college students, and to fulfill the requirements for this basic qualitative study, six participants were selected from an accredited career college (proprietary school) that met the inclusion criteria requirements. The research demographic's purposive (expert) sample characteristics required students to have completed a student success course or training within the past six months or a year. This basic qualitative research study aimed to understand and describe the student success course factors from the students' perspective and whether a student success course provides programmatic, systemic, and fundamental activities in the curriculum to fulfill those needs. The basic qualitative research design had the characteristics that produced conclusive results for this research by addressing the topic, answering the research question, and solving the research problem.
