General Education Teacher Efficacy and the Impact on Students with Ieps
Alicia Flores
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
The intent of this phenomenological study was to examine the sources, such as the resources and support needed to assist in building teacher efficacy and the impact on students with a moderate learning disability, particularly students with an Individualized Education Plan. Affording resources and support for general education teachers is critical to cultivating teacher efficacy. This study sought to explore the specific support and resources that general education teachers believe are necessary and essential for building their efficacy to successfully support students' learning outcomes. The phenomenological approach was implemented through structured interview questions with seven general education teachers through in-depth interviews over a 10-week period. The purpose of the interviews was to capture the lived experiences of seven general education teachers and identify the specific sources that built upon their teacher efficacy. This study was conducted in a large southern California elementary school district. The participants responded to questions related to teacher efficacy in relation to their experiences and beliefs in teaching students with learning disabilities. The questions were framed around efficacy beliefs, affordances, barriers, and professional development in relation to teaching students with moderate disabilities. The participants revealed three themes through the data analysis. The themes that emerged were collaboration, pedagogical content knowledge, school culture, and climate. Future research related to this area may prompt school leaders, districts, and policymakers opportunities to provide general education teachers, resources are needed to support the continuous growth of teachers' efficacy.
