The Distinguishing Influences of Loneliness and Social Isolation on the Learning Outcomes of Young Adults Post-COVID-19 Pandemic

While the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic left devastating effects on several people during the mandated days of lockdown or shelter in place, the ramifications of those orders produced increases in individuals experiencing loneliness across gender and age groups (Ernst et al., 2022). In this most restrictive mass quarantine, loneliness evolved from social isolation, jeopardizing mental and physical health (Fumagalli et al., 2021), mental well-being, student loneliness (Mizani et al., 2022), and gaps in learning that caused learning challenges or delays. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of young adult college students during the COVID-19-mandated lockdowns. The specific focus was on the impact of social isolation on adult college students and their learning outcomes. The participants were a heterogeneous representation of age, gender, ethnicity, degree of loneliness, and learning delays within their educational setting. Before conducting the formal experiment, a pilot study was performed with two participants to test and compare the validity of the procedures. The findings imply that loneliness and social isolation caused by the COVID-19 lockdowns could directly correlate with the impact of one's mental well-being and learning outcomes in college students. This study will help to understand how social isolation caused loneliness and learning delays in this population during the mandated lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic.
