Overcoming Challenges Creating Caring Online Nursing Teacher-Student Relationships: A Qualitative Descriptive Study
Melanie Hafen Escobar
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how online adjunct nursing faculty describe their experiences overcoming challenges in creating a caring teacher-student relationship throughout the United States. Noddings' Ethic of Care provided the foundation for this study as the theoretical lens that shaped the research questions and data analysis. The two guiding research questions that informed data collection were how online adjunct nursing faculty described overcoming challenges in creating a caring teacher-student relationship and how they described creating a caring teacher-student online environment. Fifteen online adjunct nursing faculty from throughout the United States described their experiences overcoming challenges to create a caring teacher-student online environment by participating in semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The data was analyzed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. The findings suggested that online adjunct nursing faculty should mutually communicate with students as they reach out and take purposeful actions that proactively meet student needs to overcome challenges creating caring teacher-student relationships. Participants described their teaching practices that supported student success as they overcame challenges to create a caring teacher-student online environment. The findings also established that to create a caring online teacher-student environment, online adjunct faculty need to build relationships by connecting with their students and being present to engage them. The findings can help online adjunct nursing faculty create caring teacher-student relationships, which can support student success.
