The Effect of the iPad Math Intervention Mathspace on High School Algebra Computation Skills

This study examined the effectiveness of the iPad app Mathspace on high school students' algebra computation and skill maintenance. The participants in this study were four ninth grade students enrolled in beginning algebra at a large, urban high school. All four students were struggling to obtain grade-level algebra skills and were reported by their teachers as the lowest performing students in their math classes. This study used a multiple probe design across participants. In the intervention condition, participants used Mathspace to learn and practice algebra skills related to exponents then answered 10-item paper and pencil algebra probes to measure progress. Once students reached mastery criteria of at least 90% accuracy on three consecutive trials, they entered the maintenance phase, where students completed intermittent probes to measure the retention of the skills learned in the intervention. The results of this study indicated that all three participants who completed the intervention improved their algebra calculation skills as a result of using Mathspace. Maintenance data obtained after the completion of the intervention indicated a decrease in scores for all three participants, but for the majority of students, their scores remained above baseline levels. Implications for practitioners and directions for future research are included. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
