A New Perspective on Terminology Training for Iranian Translation Students

This study will address how translation tools could be incorporated into the curricula of terminology courses for translators in Iran taking language policy and planning in Iran into consideration. One of the main objectives of this study is to argue that terminology courses in Iran are different from those offered in some other universities in terms of their approach with respect to using translation tools, and that it is time to incorporate the tools into the translation curricula in Iran. For this purpose, terminology courses offered in Iran have been compared with the courses offered in European, American, and non-European countries in addition to discussions on the courses proposed by Picht and Patal (1997), Cabre (1999), Faber and Martinez (2009), and Sikora (2014) to provide some criteria for how the ideal course (s) for the Farsi context should look. Conducting surveys from different academicians in terminology fields around the globe has been used to support the findings of the study. The discussion of different approaches to teaching terminology sheds light on which approach best facilitates learning in this course. As a result, this study suggests current best practices in teaching to the needs, and conditions prevalent in Iran, and for the Farsi language. Accordingly, the fundamental issue which this research is going to treat is to propose feasible improvements, and viable steps that can be taken to upgrade terminology courses for translation students in the master's program of English Translation. This suggestion must account for a number of limitations, and impediments, such as lack of interest among some older Iranian academics in replacing traditional methods with computer applications, lack of knowledgeable instructors, and the status of the translation industry in Iran.
