"It Is Just Familiarity, I Guess." Understanding the Social Interactions between Asian International and Asian Domestic Students in Australian Universities
Kean Leong
ProQuest LLC, D.I.S. Dissertation, Biola University
The internationalization of higher education has been a topic of research and discussion for several decades. It has become particularly important and relevant due to the rising number of students studying abroad and the economic benefits that international students bring to countries like Australia. One area of research has focused on the social interactions between domestic and international students. However, despite the interest and research, there is still limited interaction between these two groups in both English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries. Notably, there is a lack of literature on the perspectives of Asian domestic and Asian international students regarding their interactions with each other, and how their similar cultural backgrounds affect these interactions. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand and describe factors contributing to the social interactions between Asian international and Asian domestic students in Australia. Ten Asian domestic students and ten Asian international students from six major universities across four cities were interviewed to understand their perspectives and attitudes on their social interactions with the other group. The findings of this study revealed that Asian domestic and Asian international students socialized and made friends mainly within the confines of their classes and extracurricular activities both on and off campus. Although these interactions were generally positive, they were often superficial and limited to these specific contexts. There was a lack of incentive and opportunity for these students to invest more time and effort into building deeper social connections and friendships. It was found that the interactions and friendships between Asian domestic and Asian international students in Australian universities are complex and dynamic. It involved the interaction of the student's personal agency with the environments they were in and influenced by various interconnected and interacting social, intercultural, and personal factors. However, with the appropriate environment and motivation, Asian domestic and Asian international students can form meaningful and ongoing friendships due to their common cultural background.
