School Based CBT-Yoga to Reduce Anxiety in Adolescents
Tiffany Narain
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adelphi University
In this dissertation an integrated intervention in high schools is proposed for students with anxiety that combines CBT and yoga methods. The development of this program was derived from a critical review of the literature on CBT and yoga programs in high school that aim to reduce anxiety in students. Thirteen studies that used CBT programs and seven that used yoga programs met the inclusion criteria for this study. The selected articles were analyzed in terms of content, frequency and duration, facilitators, implementation type, age range, and outcome measure to identify common elements found in the interventions that were effective. The results provided clarity in terms of the CBT and yoga principles that have been found to be effective, as well as guidance regarding the frequency and duration of sessions, the training of the facilitators, the screening of participants and implementation of the program, as well as outcome measures to assess the program's effectiveness. The proposed program provides a consistent and structured yoga sequence and the rationale for the inclusion of the specific techniques and postures and complementary CBT sessions that are based on the research findings and include elements such as psychoeducation, awareness of thoughts and identification of emotions, cognitive restructuring, and development of emotional regulation and coping skills.
