The Advantages of Disadvantages: An Investigation of Successful First-Generation, Low-Income College Students' Experiences
Karl D. Liedtka
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The researcher designed this qualitative descriptive study to investigate the experiences of successful first-generation, low-income college students that contributed to their ability to complete a bachelor's degree. A strength-based perspective was used to examine successful students and their unique abilities, allowing them to overcome various challenges. Twelve individual interviews and two focus groups were conducted to gather information from participants regarding the experiences that contributed to their ability to complete a bachelor's degree. The researcher utilized positive psychology and second wave positive psychology to frame the research questions. Utilizing reflexive thematic analysis, the researcher identified several themes that supported these theories' use in increasing the success of FGCS. Data collected from this study may be used to inform college administrators and college success programs that work to increase the graduation rates of FGCS. Based on the results of the participant's responses, it is recommended that future researchers investigate the effectiveness of using the PERMA Profiler as a measure to predict the success of first-generation college students. Additionally, future studies should examine the role that second wave positive psychology plays in contributing to first-generation college students' success.
