Impacting Educator Behavior and Mindsets through Effective Professional Development
Meaghan Alana Gribbins
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Wisconsin
This research aimed to investigate elements of professional development that can positively impact the conduct of educators through professional development. Professional development is needed to address a problem in the field of education with educators' mindsets negatively impacting students' achievement and school experience. Some educators' mindsets are fixed on believing Black and Brown students need to be "fixed," which creates behaviors and attitudes that put students at a disadvantage. Educators allow their deficit mindsets or implicit biases to dictate how they teach students, interact with students, and the opportunities they provide, especially to minority groups. Having deficit mindsets and not knowing how to address students' differences has impacted students' motivation due to negative classroom experiences. Effective professional development can provide tools and resources for educators to address these discrepancies while shifting their behaviors and mindsets. Using a mixed study, educators completed a survey on aspects of professional development, specifically in the areas of environment, approaches to professional development, and the amount of time spent on professional development. The survey had both multiple-choice questions and short-answer responses. The quantitative measures were taken from the multiple-choice questions, and the qualitative measures were analyzed in the short-answer responses. The findings suggested that educators preferred to learn in a small group with collaborative learning activities for two hours monthly. Professional development facilitators can develop a series of professional development using the recommendations from this study to create change in the classroom, specifically with behaviors and mindsets.
