Teacher Perceptions of How 21st Century 4C Skills Are Being Implemented in Online Instructional Practices

The 21st century is a new era full of hope and challenges, and 21st century skills are crucial to today's globalized world (Goradia, 2018; Bellanca & Brant, 2010; Worapun et al., 2022). More and more educational organizations have started to realize the importance of applying 21st century skills to contemporary education. In this changing world, Christian educators play a significant role in equipping their students with the required skills for employment in the 21st century, so these students can fulfill God's purpose in their lives (Graham, 2009). The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher perceptions of how 21st century skills are being implemented into online instruction, with a special emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills (4Cs). Online faculty members who teach at Christian Colleges were asked to complete a web-based survey consisting of 38 items addressing 4C skills in addition to three demographic items. A mixed method was utilized for data analysis. The quantitative data from select response survey items were summarized using descriptive statistics such as means, variances, and standard deviations. Independent sample t-tests and ANOVA were utilized to analyze data of demographic questions for statically significant differences. This study indicated that teachers perceived communication and critical thinking as the most integrated skills in online instruction. Teachers perceived collaboration as the skill they integrated the least into online instruction. The results revealed that respondents' gender, years of online teaching experience, and course program involvement did not play a significant role in the effectiveness of 21st century skills being implemented into online instruction.
