ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
The purpose of this study was to examine faculty's perceptions of the importance of online teaching competencies and their perceptions of their ability to teach online. Two aspects of readiness are focused on in this framework: (1) faculty attitude on importance of online teaching competencies and (2) faculty perception on their ability to confidently teach online, and four competencies were utilized in this study: Course Design, Course Communication, Time Management, and Technical Competency. A quantitative research design was utilized to analyze data and show the degree of correlation between importance and ability in the four competencies. MANOVA was used to examine the importance of the competencies for online teaching and the ability to accomplish such competencies while teaching online. Finally, a post hoc comparison of results was analyzed in order to identify any differences with respect to gender, teacher rank, teaching experience, and subject. The results demonstrated a weak positive relationship between self-reported perceptions of the importance of online teaching competencies and self-reported ability to teach online.
