Creating Trauma-Informed Schools: A Three-Day Professional Workshop for K-12 Educators
Kendra McLaughlin
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
Trauma exposure can significantly impact many aspects of a student's life, hindering health outcomes, relationships, and progress at school. Educators spend a lot of time working with students but are not adequately prepared to manage the challenges that accompany students with trauma histories. The purpose of this project was to create a three-day workshop for K-12 educators, equipping educators with the knowledge and strategies needed to work with all students. The workshop objectives are to learn about trauma and its impact, learn specific classroom strategies, engage in structured activities to build trauma-informed systems, and improve educator well-being. The workshop includes two follow-up days to reinforce the integration of strategies learned while offering support, encouragement, and additional coaching as needed. This workshop bridges the gap by training educators on trauma-informed care while laying the foundation for future research to evaluate the effectiveness of this school-wide approach. A trauma-informed approach can improve student attendance, academic achievement, and behaviors while reducing educator burnout.
