Attitudes toward Diversity and Civic Engagement Outcomes for University Employee Participants of a Civil Rights Bus Tour
Bert, Jonathan D.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania
This dissertation evaluated the outcomes of a civil rights bus tour as a diversity initiative for employees at a private Christian university in Pennsylvania. Previous qualitative research suggests that participants improve their attitudes toward diversity and experience increased levels of civic engagement. This study quantitatively evaluated attitudes toward diversity using the Color-Blind Racial Attitudes Scale (CoBRAS) measuring individuals' understanding of racial inequality and the value of a diverse population. The study measured civic engagement using the Civic Engagement Scale (CES). Past tour participants were also asked several qualitative questions regarding their perceptions of the tour's impact. As a posttest-only nonequivalent control group design, the study compares past tour participants to those not exposed to the tour. Results show a strong correlation between exposure to the tour and attitudes toward diversity. Irrespective of the other independent variables, respondents who participated in the civil rights tour have less color-blind racial attitudes than those who have not participated. The qualitative results support this finding, suggesting that significant personal and professional impacts related to improved attitudes toward diversity exist. The qualitative results also suggest that tour participants feel a greater responsibility to address inequity and to civically engage in new ways.
