"Take up Space, Sis": A Phenomenological Study on the Experiences of Black Women Graduate Degree Completers, Resilience, and Imposter Phenomenon
Breonna Stone
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Cardinal Stritch University
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to conduct an exploration of resilience and how it motivates Black women in graduate degree programs to persist through feelings of imposter syndrome. The related research question was: "How do Black women graduate degree completers build resilience?" While existing as a double minority across both gender and race, this research study sought to understand this group of women's experiences as they navigated rigorous graduate degree programs. The purpose of this study was to supplement the narrative mentioned with research that focuses specifically on how a large number of these women completed rigorous degrees at the intersection of imposter syndrome. This phenomenological study attempted to understand the experiences of Black women who dealt with impostor phenomenon while completing graduate degree programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted across 10 Black women who completed graduate degree programs and self-identified as having experienced imposter syndrome during the process. These findings yield further implications to the body of research concerning how Black women graduate degree completers built resilience as they navigated through feelings of imposter syndrome while in rigorous graduate degree programs.
