The Path to Becoming a Black Female Principal in Texas: A Phenomenological Study
Walker, Claudia L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, City University of Seattle
Black women are among the diverse members of society seeking to gain access to leadership roles in education, specifically, to serve as principals in Texas. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women who have become principals in Texas. The qualitative research method with phenomenological research design was used in this dissertation. Gall et al., described how participants in qualitative research are intentionally and purposely selected. Brinkman determined qualitative research purposefully enlightens participants' significant experiences and opinions. Of the 8416 public-school principals in Texas, 5,427 were women, and 741 of the 5,427 were Black women. The research population consisted of female public-school principals who were members of the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE). They all have served as principals in the state of Texas. Purposive sampling was used to identify participants from the membership of the TABSE database. The interview and researcher were the instruments used to collect data and discover themes. A result of the data collection was that nine of the ten women had a parent or grandparent who set the servant leadership example in their lives. An additional result was all ten women experienced ethnic or gender bias on their paths. A drawn conclusion was that the ten Black women principals were successful on their paths because they were resilient and practiced self-efficacy in their lives. A recommendation for a future study would be to determine the role of mentors in a Black woman's life on her leadership path. Another recommendation for a future study could address the paths Black women took to develop into leaders.
