The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on K-12 Educators: Testing Teacher Thriveability, Resilience and Leadership during the Transition to an Online Platform

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
The Coronavirus pandemic forced educators to leave the comfort of their classrooms and transition to an online teaching platform. During the beginning of the pandemic teachers were lost and experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression. K-12 teachers had no plan or training to pivot to remote learning. Physical distancing lead teachers and students to uncharted territory. The necessary changes had a direct impact on teachers' mental health. Many studies have investigated teachers' mental health and social emotional health while navigating to the new normal. During the transition teachers had to find ways to balance their own social emotional health and their new responsibilities of remote learning. Most teachers put the needs of the students before their own needs, which caused teachers to burn out. It was vital for K-12 teachers to focus on thriving and cultivating their own resilience as they made the necessary changes required for online leaning. Also, teachers had to follow a leadership practice that would serve and motivate their students. Quantitative research was conducted in K-12 schools located in San Diego. The instruments used for data collection were Likert scales and SPSS software was used to analyze the data. The results of the study found during the transition to online teacher, K12 teachers thrived, were resilient and agreed with the Servant Leadership model. A recommendation for further study to consider is developing ways schools can prepare for future crisis, improve the school culture, and find strategies to help teachers thrive, be resilient, and become servant leader.
