Newman, Donna Marie
ProQuest LLC, D.E.Lead. Dissertation, University of Charleston - Beckley
The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to enhance the understanding of executive leadership pathways in intercollegiate Division II women's basketball. Face-to-face semi-structured interview were used to gather perceptions from head coaches and assistant coaches on executive leadership development. The participants included head coaches and assistant coaches from the Division II Women's basketball Mountain East Conference. The findings indicate that head coaches see relationships as a positive means for success as a team. Furthermore, these relationships are reciprocal and interactive. The results suggest that communication, collaboration, strategy, and an interpersonal approach lead to team unity and partnership. The dynamics within the Mountain East Conference culture revealed emergent themes such as: relationships, team, and leadership. This framework led to various sub-themes like trust, community, balance, and opportunity. Future recommendations for head coaches and assistant coaches executive leadership development include exploring best leadership practices within Division I and Division III programs and advocating for or comparing resources (staff, budget) to enhance leadership opportunities. "Coaching is all about having someone believe in you and encourage you, about getting valuable feedback, about seeing things from new perspectives and setting your sights on new horizons." -- "Author Unknown."
