Preserving the Residential School: The Influence of Relationships, Marketing, and Academic Programs When Addressing the Decrease in Student Enrollment at Residential Schools for the Deaf
Watson, Adelaide R.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Converse University
The enrollment at specialized schools for the deaf, with dormitories, is declining all around the country. A plethora of challenges serve as catalysts for this decline. If schools cannot have a thriving student population, they may cease to function in their academic capacity, thus losing access to Deaf culture and a highly qualified deaf education. This research study aimed to address this decline in student enrollment at these institutions by presenting a targeted proposal that outlined ways to combat the decrease in student enrollment to a panel of experts. Personal communications with expert panel members served as the data for the study. Experts panel members were deaf education stakeholders at residential schools around the United States who could firsthand speak to the proposal and study's topic. Major themes such as relationships, marketing and branding, academic programs, laws and the least restrictive environment, money and budgets, and more were concluded from panelist feedback. The themes concluded serve to provide leaders in deaf education areas of attention when strategically planning on how to increase student enrollment at these specialized institutions.
