The Pursuence for Differentiated Special Education Curriculum for Students Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Carter, Shannon Louise
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
The purpose of this study was to explore the need for an individualized curriculum within special education for students living with autism spectrum disorder. Previously conducted research disclosed a need for further research to understand the differentiation of curriculum for students living with autism spectrum disorder. The research question addressed in this study was: Is there a need for individualized curriculum for students living with autism spectrum disorder in Special Education? A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was used to complete this study. The interview questions were designed to obtain information on beliefs toward curriculum development and design, learning styles and experiences instructing students with autism spectrum disorder, and the thoughts of creating an individualized curriculum for students with autism spectrum disorder. This study sought to expand the understanding of knowledge of curriculum design and instruction for students with autism spectrum disorder. The results of the data analysis suggested that instructors value curriculum design but struggled with limited support, resources, and the understanding of learning needs for students with autism spectrum disorder.
