The purpose of this Executive Position Paper was to research how to design an online, synchronous, asynchronous, or face-to-face training program for higher education instructors to serve the needs of a diverse student population of emergent learners, specifically in the community college sector. The subsequent research resulted in a faculty training program to provide learning strategies to assist instructors in developing effective courses and learning material to engage all students. This training, titled "The Universal Design for Learning Online Training Program" incorporates Universal Design for Learning, which uses various methods such as lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities, and multimodal resources. Instructors can also provide regular feedback and support to students to help them stay engaged and motivated throughout a course. This paper provides research-based teaching and learning strategies to reach a diverse student population, increase retention, and enhance student success. The resulting training can help provide instructors with professional development opportunities focusing on Universal Design for Learning while acknowledging the use of pedagogy and andragogy in instructional design. It also presents student engagement strategies that will equip instructors with the skills they need to create compelling learning experiences for their students.
