"We're Here… and I'm Not the Only One:" Visibility and Kinship as Forms of Queering Civic Engagement at a Four-Year Public University

Institutions of higher education are environments of civic engagement, with a special responsibility of fostering participation among members and involvement in the community. Yet, a common issue is a definitional one. Scholars and practitioners have debated what counts as college student civic engagement, with as many definitions as participants in the process. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth have limited access to resources and face real-world consequences of anti-LGBTQ+ bias. Queer and transgender students interact with multiple layers of society, and multiple layers of society impact queer and transgender youth. Based on the work of Black feminist and queer theory, with a focus on liberation, the double-helix model I developed recognizes the tension and interconnecting politics and lives of queer and transgender people. How marginalized college students construct meaning of their civic engagement, their sense of identity, and their perception of institutional influence is important for educational leaders to understand. By using a case study approach with narrative elements, this study grounds the student voices developing programs, policies, and procedures and informing improving practices. Civic engagement for all the participants was an action, an active verb meant to mobilize positive change. While there was difference in definition, all four individual participants affirmed that participating in causes greater than oneself for the sake of others was important to them. The study discusses visibility, outness, coming out, and kinship as queered forms of civic engagement.
