Experiences of Nursing Students Regarding the Impact of Inclusive Nursing Curricula and Knowledge of Implicit Bias on Healthcare Disparities: A Phenomenological Study

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware State University
The problem the current study aimed to evaluate was whether nursing students will graduate from nursing programs prepared to care for a culturally diverse population. Using the theory of cultural humility to underpin this research, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover nursing students' experiences, beliefs, and attitudes regarding their experiences with inclusive nursing program curricula, including implicit bias influence on healthcare disparities. Four research questions guided this exploration, focused on gathering data regarding the experiences and perceptions of nursing students regarding the impact of inclusive nursing curricula and knowledge of implicit bias on healthcare disparities. To answer these questions, 10 prelicensure nursing students, identified through purposive sampling, participated in virtual one-to-one, semi-structured interviews. Four themes emerged from thematic analysis: (a) Nursing curriculum does not adequately prepare nursing students to care for culturally diverse patient populations, (b) information about inclusiveness is superficial and has significant gaps, (c) healthcare disparities and implicit bias are only addressed superficially, and (d) discussion of specific diseases was brief but sometimes informative. Results may create improvements in the quality-of-care nurses provide to patients from diverse populations and improvements in healthcare outcomes for those patients. From these findings, a tool was developed to evaluate a curriculum for inclusiveness, create an inclusive environment, and test education and inclusion. Stakeholders may use this tool to create a more inclusive environment by enhancing cultural knowledge. Additionally, future implementors can use the cultural awareness framework to develop curriculums further.
