Higher Education Leaders Incorporating Servingness in Strategic Planning at Hispanic-Serving Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry

The problem addressed was the misalignment between Hispanic-serving institution's (HSIs) strategic plans and moving toward servingness. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry study was to explore the experiences, perceptions, and stories of higher education leaders participating in developing a strategic plan that aligned with moving toward servingness. The multidimensional conceptual framework for understanding servingness in HSIs guided the study and specifically focused on the structures for serving component of the framework. Eight higher education leaders from one federally designated HSI were interviewed through in-depth narrative interviews. Thematic analysis resulted in 13 emergent themes. The key findings highlighted that alignment between the HSI's strategic plan and moving toward servingness begins with embracing and defining what the HSI designation means as an institutional identity. All areas of the HSI must embrace the designation. The HSI leadership is vital to the direction of the strategic plan; thus, they should be equipped to respond to the resistance to centering Latinx students that is rooted in White supremacy. Institution-wide trainings on how to detect and disrupt decentering and deficit language to discuss Latinx students contributes to aligning the strategic plan and intentionally serving Latinx students. Implications for HSI leaders are discussed including being conscious of ways Latinx students are decentered when developing strategic plans. Recommendations for practice consisted of (a) leading collective, institution-wide understanding of servingness; (b) co-creating with Latinx students to avoid decentering statements, actions, and behaviors; (c) aligning all institutional initiatives; and (d) investing in appropriate professional development. Recommendations for future research included expanding the sample to other stakeholder groups, including more than one research site, and comparing the results of the study with the strategic plan document.
