Supporting BC Post-Secondary Students with Lived Experience in Care
British Columbia Council on Admissions and Transfer
Students with lived experience in government care can face significant challenges in their lives and their educational journeys. Students entering higher education may be simultaneously transitioning out of government care and grappling with the complexities of a new educational system. Students formerly in care are more likely than the general student population to be Indigenous, to experience poverty and homelessness, mental health and substance abuse challenges, disabilities, and often identify as members of marginalized groups overrepresented in the child welfare system. In 2017, the British Columbia (BC) government created the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (PTWP) to encourage students with lived experience in care to continue their education at the post-secondary level. In the four years since the PTWP was launched, more supports have been made available to BC students with lived experience in care. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of financial, academic, and mental health supports intended to improve the post-secondary experience of students with lived experience in BC's care system.
