Burnout, Stress, and Resilience of Doctoral Students between the Coursework and Research Phase
Javier, Brittany Nicole Evans
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study using a one-way MANOVA was to determine if and to what extent there were statistically significant differences for doctoral students attending universities in the United States between the coursework phase and research phase of a doctoral program on measures of burnout (as measured by exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy), stress, and resilience. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey measured burnout. The Perceived Stress Scale measured stress, and the Brief Resilience Scale measured resilience. From the target population of 30,000 doctoral students engaged in six doctoral Facebook groups, 116 doctoral students in DBA and PhD programs provided the overall sample for this study. A one-way MANOVA was used to determine if there was a difference between the groups of doctoral students in the course phase versus the research phase of the doctoral program. The results showed that all the scores for burnout, stress, and resilience were at average or midrange levels per the instruments. The doctoral students' levels of burnout, stress, and resilience between the coursework and the research phases of their doctoral program showed no significant differences. These findings suggest that there may be no differences between burnout (as measured by exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy), stress, and resilience doctoral students experience based on program phase. Future research should explore psychological and emotional experiences the students face during the program phases, which have been identified in prior research studies as being impacted by phase.
