Women of Color Mentorship/Femtorship: Identity-Conscious Strategies for Leadership Advancement in Student Services at California Community Colleges

The purpose of this study was to explore the mentorship women of color leaders provide other women of color seeking leadership advancement in Student Services at California community colleges. Specifically, the interviews and observations were designed to capture the identity-conscious strategies, related to the intersection of race and gender, women of color advise. This qualitative narrative, single embedded case study adapted an Intersectionality conceptual framework to examine three women of color mentors' strategic approaches -- one African American, one Latina, and one whose identity falls under the umbrella of Asian American. All women of color mentors serve as leaders in Student Services at their respective California community colleges. As women of color are likely to face obstacles due to their marginalized identities while on their journeys to and within leadership, this study's findings reveal identity-conscious strategies for how to address them. These strategies include how to obtain a woman of color mentor, utilizing identity as an anchor for how to lead, avoiding perceptions as secretaries, assistants, or "the help", and maintaining wellness to achieve one's professional goals. This study contributes to the field by providing a guide for women of color hoping to elevate in leadership within the field.
