Meta-Analytic Review of Gatekeeper Training Programs on College Campuses
Kuntz, Clara V.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, State University of New York at Buffalo
This study explored the various types of suicide prevention gatekeeper training programs implemented on college campuses through a meta-analytic review. One hundred eighty-four effect sizes were calculated from 53 studies to explore seven outcomes of interest: (1) Knowledge of Suicide, (2) Knowledge of Gatekeeper Skills (GK), (3) Appropriateness, (4) Self-efficacy, (5) Behavior Intent, (6) Interactions, and (7) Referrals. These outcomes were chosen because they seemed to cover the key aspects of the goals of gatekeeper training; specifically, exploring the impact gatekeeper trainings have on trainee's knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Three research designs were represented among the studies included in this meta-analytic review: (1) posttest only, (2) pretest-posttest with a control group, and (3) pretest-posttest without a control group. The results of this meta-analysis confirm that there are short-term gains for gatekeeper trainings. In particular, knowledge seemed to result in the largest change, followed by changes in attitudes, intention to act on skills, and actual engagement in the skills through interactions with at-risk students and referrals. There is some question about the sustainability of these gains over time. This study also highlights the limitations found among the literature on gatekeeper trainings and offers suggestions for future research. This review accentuates the importance of bridging the gap between research and practice in suicide preventive efforts on college campuses.
