Seven Ways to Improve Students' Online Learning Experiences in Your Subject. Melbourne CSHE Teaching and Learning Short Guide Series
Kennedy, Gregor
Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education
How can educators create learning activities and tasks, or modify existing tasks, to support general ambitions for high quality online learning? This document provides some advice to respond to this in the form of seven specific ways to improve online learning in a subject. The focus is on providing ways in which educators can, relatively easily and simply, increase the participation and engagement of students in an existing online subject. Increasing students' engagement and interaction has been shown to increase students' learning outcomes and appreciation of the subject. The following seven ways to improve online learning in a subject are presented: (1) Get the basics right; (2) Establish your presence … regularly; (3) Generate student interaction through online discussion; (4) Have at least one synchronous session with students; (5) Create student engagement and interaction through polling; (6) Provide regular advice to students … particularly about assessment; and (7) Look at what students are doing and adjust.
