Interdisciplinary Connections in the Next Generation Science Standards: Realizing the Vision
Delgado, Cesar; You, Hye Sun
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (New York City, NY, Apr 13-17, 2018)
This paper provides a conceptual analysis and methodology to improve the Next Generation Science Standards' focus on interdisciplinary connections. The paper identifies a plethora of connections across Disciplinary Core Ideas that are neglected by the NGSS. In addition, it presents a methodology to generate "educative" curriculum materials. The specific case of middle school global warming (MS.ESS3.D) is developed. Curriculum and assessment resources are presented and evaluated. It is expected that the approach exemplified in this paper will be useful for teachers and curriculum developers when designing lessons and teaching interdisciplinary science topics.
