Political Diversity in Relation to Stress and Health, among Graduate Students in the Mental Health Field

Across the humanities disciplines and within the discipline of psychology, academic instructors and researchers self-identify as politically liberal. Little research has been conducted on the impact of political homogeneity within institutions of higher learning for graduate students in the mental health field. We investigated the political affiliation of graduate students in the mental health field and if they feel that others at their institution share their political affiliation, in relation to stress and health, and the extent to which individuals who identify as conservative perceive hostility. We also examined specific relatively under-explored demographic variables, political minority or political majority identification, gender, discipline, degree, and year in program of graduate students in the mental health field as they relate to stress and health. Of the sample (N = 512), most graduate students in the mental health field sample identified as liberal. However, unexpectedly, this identification was more strongly associated with more stress and poorer health than was a conservative or moderate identification. The present study found that participants who identified as women had poorer health than men. It can be speculated that societal issues and current events may have a large impact on student well-being, and that the political affiliation influences graduate students in the mental health field beyond the walls of their institution.
