Adverse Childhood Experiences and Urban Public School Leadership
Noise, Tyisha J. L.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
Adverse childhood experiences and childhood trauma impact learning outcomes of children nationwide. The prevalence of students having experienced one to two ACEs in the last year is approximately 50% nationally. This number of ACE experiences and/or exposures as well as their related sequelae is intensified in impoverished communities. Currently, 50% of the seats in urban public schools are filled with socioeconomically disadvantaged students of color who are being disproportionately impacted by this phenomenon. This study reveals that, while most school leaders are aware of ACEs and their ramifications in the lives of students, few, if any, are prepared to harness the ACE- and trauma-related research to build the trauma-sensitive environments needed to bring healing to students and maximize their academic potential.
